Data Disk Files are self-extracting WinZip* archives. If you need to get the data files or any other file supplements for your text from course.com, you can obtain the files by following 4 simple steps (Note: Due to their size, the data files for some books might require downloading multiple WinZip archives. If this is the case for your book, repeat these steps for each WinZip archive file):

1. Find the file of your choice:

2. Download the self-extracting compressed file to your hard drive:

  • Begin by creating a directory on your drive named "Download" that will contain the compressed file. Place this directory under the root directory of drive C (i.e., C:\Download).
  • Click the link for the supplement you wish to download.
  • Your Web browser (most students and customers use Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer) will ask how you would like to handle the compressed file (see Figure 1 and Figure 2).
  • Choose to save the file to disk. Depending on your browser, wording may vary (e.g., "Save File," or "Save" are typical choices.).
  • Choose the "Download" directory as the location on your computer to save the file (see Figure 3 and Figure 4).
  • The filename of the compressed file appears in the Save As dialog box (e.g., 86092-1d.exe).
  • Click Save to save the file.

3. Extract the self-extracting compressed file:

  • If using Windows XP click Start and then click Run. If using Windows Vista click Start, then click All Programs, then click Accessories, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
  • Type C:\Download\0000-0.exe in the Open text box and then press Enter (see Figure 5).
    • C:\Download\" is the location of the file you downloaded
    • "0000-0.exe" is the name of the file you downloaded
  • If the Security Warning dialog box opens (see Figure 6), click Run.
  • When the WinZip Self-Extractor dialog box opens (see Figure 7), click Unzip to extract your file.
  • Once your file has been unzipped successfully, click OK (see Figure 8) and then click Close in the WinZip Self-Extractor dialog box (see Figure 9).

4. Review the contents of your newly created directory:

  • Once you've extracted the compressed file, open Windows Explorer.
  • Next, open the "C:\Course Technology\0000-0" directory to see the extracted files.
*Macintosh users should use a program to expand WinZip archives. Students, ask your instructors or lab coordinators for assistance.
