At Wayne County Community College District in Michigan I teach a variety of courses including Introduction to Computer Information Systems, Structured Design, Networking, Systems Analysis and Design, Logistics, Purchasing, and Supply Chain Management.

Introduction to Computer Information Systems is offered in at least 10 sections a semester and total enrollment in the course averages approximately 225 students. This course is designed to introduce students to the vocabulary and concepts needed to pursue a major in Computer Information Systems. We look at the industry in general, career paths, computer software and hardware, ethical, and societal impacts affecting the industry.

In our course we were struggling to find good class exercises that we could use that pertain to the subject material we were covering. To combat this, the school chose New Perspectives on Computer Concepts which includes an extensive set of supplements to the book. The book, and more importantly the BookOnCD, provides students with a comprehensive set of examples, exercises, labs, and much more.

After using New Perspectives on Computer Concepts and its collection of exercises, we have found that students’ scores and knowledge levels have increased. Students have also gained a greater interest in the topics because they are more involved. Students have remarked how they love the BookOnCD and how all of the interactive labs help them apply what they are learning.

We’ve used Course Technology products for years because their solutions are very well documented and they provide great examples and exercises. Course Technology gives you the supplements needed to be successful.
